The internal energy \( \Delta U \) of a system changes. According to the first law of thermodynamics this change happens due to two other possible changes:
- Work done \( \class{purple}{\Delta W} \) on (arrow points to the system) or by (arrow points away).
- Thermal energy \( \class{orange}{\Delta Q} \) is removed from or added to the system.
