LIFE:
Opening locked doors with an EC card. Sleeping bag instead of a comforter
April 20, 2024. I wake up at 7:30 AM. The sky is blue. The first rays of sunlight illuminate the treetops. But it’s only 5 degrees. Lara was in the shower singing. That reminded me of Jule because she always sang in the shower too.
I went to the library. I searched for lichens and found them in several places. After buying some rolls, I found many lichens in the cemetery. This indicates good air quality. The lichens I found were growing in a southeastern direction, towards the sun.
I was the only one on the fourth floor of the library. It was very quiet. Actually, I should have been working on the detox book until noon, but I preferred to look for potential partners instead. I only worked on the detox book until 10:20 AM. Mom called and asked if I wanted to come over. I agreed since I wanted to pick up my sleeping bag and bring my thick blanket back to Borsum anyway.
After a walk, I had a coffee at HanoMacke and then went home to get the thick blanket. The front door wouldn't open. Someone had kicked it in so that it was wobbly. A lock pick would have been handy right now. Luckily, the neighbor from above opened the door for me.
On my way to the train, I got a coffee to go at Le Crobag on platform 13, where there used to be no oat milk, but thankfully there is now. The world is changing.
While I was waiting for the train, I thought about teaching myself how to pick locks. At 12:34 PM, I set off.
On the train, I read about lock picking. A conventional lock has a cylinder with pin tumblers that are attached to a spring. The right key pushes the pins to the correct height, allowing the cylinder to turn and the lock to be opened.
To pick the lock, I need to position the pins with a suitable lock picking tool. The three most important lock picking tools are the tension wrench (which maintains tension on the cylinder after the pins have been positioned correctly), the hook (which positions the pins one by one), and the rake, which is an alternative to the hook. It manipulates all the pins simultaneously and randomly, so it only works on simple locks.
I was alone in Borsum. Mom spent the night at Julien's and won't be back until tomorrow afternoon. I watched videos on the topic of lock picking and realized how easy it is not only to open unlocked apartment doors in seconds but also to break bicycle locks or break into apartments. Good thing, as an extreme minimalist, I have nothing valuable at home.
I tried to open the apartment door with a card for an hour. Then I stopped because the neighbor asked me what I was doing. I took a break and unpacked my new sleeping bag. It doesn't smell like chemicals like the cheap sleeping bag before. The size of the sleeping bag compared to the comforter.
Second attempt to open the locked apartment door with the card. It didn't work, my hands hurt. I took out gloves from my backpack. That made it easier. On the second attempt, it worked! On the third attempt, it also worked after a few failed attempts. I'm amazed at how quickly one can open an unlocked door with a little practice. Fourth attempt. The old debit card broke a piece off.
Learnings:
- The lock has a cylinder with pins. To open the lock, the pins must be positioned correctly with the help of a tension wrench and a hook.
- A fallen-door can be opened with a debit card.
- I can use my gloves not only in winter but also for tasks where I might injure my hands.
Micro-change: I replaced the comforter with a huge pack size and a weight of 2 kg with a sleeping bag that has a pack size three times smaller and a weight of 1.3 kg. The sleeping bag can also be used outdoors as it is wind and rainproof.
