LIFE:

Layer system for outdoor. New calendar habits. Simplify master password.

November 5, 2024.

I woke up around 4 am today. Then slept until 8.

After breakfast, I learned about the shift system for outdoor areas.

  1. Base layer - is directly next to the skin. Purpose: wicks moisture away from the skin. The more sweat-inducing the activity, the better it should wick away moisture. Suitable fabric: Wool (less sweat-inducing, like walking), synthetic fibers (more sweat-inducing), MESH (seems to be very ingenious).
I would also like the base layer to fulfill other criteria: It should be as chemically untreated as possible (e.g. not dyed). It should be made of a natural material (synthetic fibers directly on the body are out of the question for me).
  2. Mid layer - lies on the base layer and transfers moisture from the base layer to the outside. Suitable fabrics: fleece and softshell.
  3. Insulation layer (optional 3rd layer) - is used for insulation and is only worn when at rest (when not sweating).
  4. Weather protection - is the outermost layer and keeps the inner layers dry. This layer protects against wind, rain and snow. Suitable: Hardshell jacket or rain poncho. As it has an insulating effect, there should be sufficient ventilation when sweating (now I know why zippers are useful under the armpits of a rain jacket).

In addition to cleaning out my mom's house, I found one more thing on the password-free smartphone that reveals something about the owner, namely the calendar that I use. I have come up with the following habits so that I don't have any sensitive data in the calendar. If possible, I will memorize the appointment in my head. Or, if the appointment is too important, I'll write it down in the calendar with an abbreviation so that it's not immediately obvious what the appointment is. For the “Fluent Body” appointment on Thursday, I would simply enter “F.B.”. I know what that means. And another person who gets access to the smartphone can only guess.

However, I then realized that although I don't disclose any sensitive data if I lose the password-free smartphone, I do lose the calendar entries, which is why I then don't know what appointments I have. I have therefore decided to delete the calendar on the smartphone completely and use it in the email inbox instead using the initials strategy above. I also save myself from constantly looking at the calendar and appointments when I reach for my smartphone. This certainly reduces stress when you have a really full calendar. One glance at the calendar a day while checking emails is enough.

I then continued to think about how I could simplify digital life as much as possible. I came up with the idea of simplifying the master password. On October 19, 2023, I got rid of the password manager and created a single super-long master password that I only stored in my head. The next step is to get rid of the fear of being hacked, but also to reduce all sensitive online data as much as possible (such as by using the zero email inbox). I have already done that. The next step is to shorten the master password to make it easier to log in.

I am grateful today:

  • For the fact that I now know roughly how to dress for the weather. Along the lines of: there's no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes.
  • For coming up with another mirco-change in the field of digital minimalism.
  • For putting more items up for sale. I realize that I'm going back to extreme minimalism as if I were returning to my “true” state after manipulation of my mother to get a normal life.
